The Basics of Hot Tub Maintenance

The fact that there is very little to regular hot tub maintenance is one of the best things about owning a home spa. Not to mention the rest and relaxation from many hours spent enjoying the tub itself. But even though there is very little maintenance, your home spa does need some care on a regular basis. Here are the most basic requirements when it comes to maintaining your hot tub.

The Acrylic Surface

Proper hot tub maintenance will ensure your spa lasts for years to come. Taking care of the acrylic surface is one of the most important things you can do. You can purchase acrylic repair kits to touch up scratches on your hot tub; however prevention is the best course of action.

Ensure that no shoes are worn inside your hot tub. This includes soft-soled shoes and beach sandals. Be sure to keep drinking glasses, plates and eating utensils away from the spa, including off the rim of the tub.

Cleaning the acrylic surface should be done regularly and your schedule for this will vary depending on how frequently you use the tub and how many people are in it. Typically you will want to wipe down your spa with a damp cloth and cleanser specifically manufactured for acrylic spas. These types of cleaners are formulated to keep algae, mold and dirt from appearing along the edge of your hot tub.

The Filter

Rinsing out your filter is also part of regular maintenance for your hot tub. Again, it does depend on how frequently the tub is used but as a general guideline, anywhere from once weekly to once monthly may be sufficient. Most filters can simply be rinsed out in the sink or with a garden hose.

The Heating Element

The heating element is usually the only other part of a hot tub that would require maintenance. Because each make and model has different ways of being heated, you will want to check with your owner’s manual or online instructions from the manufacturer as to how to clean the heating element and how frequently. Usually a quick wipe with a sponge or damp cloth is sufficient to keep them free of buildup and debris.

Water Purifiers

There are a variety of chemicals and cleansers that you can add to your water if you want to. This is not a necessary part of hot tub maintenance but rather a personal decision as to how purified you want your water or how sensitive you are to the chemicals.

If you keep up with these basic maintenance steps, your home hot tub should last for years to come!
